If you’re looking for iOS 26.7.1 but your iPhone only shows iOS 27, the older update may simply be less prominent on the Software Update screen.
Here’s what to check before installing a major iOS upgrade.
Twelve South AirFly Drive: A Smarter Wireless CarPlay Upgrade
1. Check Below the iOS 27 Upgrade
Open Settings → General → Software Update.
If your iPhone is eligible for both updates, Apple may display the smaller iOS 26 update separately from the iOS 27 upgrade.
Scroll down and carefully review the available options. Don’t assume the large iOS 27 upgrade banner is your only choice.
2. Find iOS 26.7.1 Under “Also Available”
On October 8, Apple changed how updates appear for iPhones still running iOS 26. According to MacRumors, iOS 27.0.1 now appears as the main update, while iOS 26.7.1 is listed under Also Available.
To install the older security update:
Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi.
Open Settings → General → Software Update.
Scroll down to Also Available.
Select iOS 26.7.1.
Verify the version and tap Download and Install.
This option appears only on eligible devices still offered the iOS 26 update.
3. Why iOS 26.7.1 Matters
iOS 26.7.1 is primarily a security update rather than a major feature release.
It addresses a CoreGraphics vulnerability, and Apple has acknowledged reports of highly targeted attacks involving versions before iOS 27. Installing the update helps protect users who prefer not to upgrade to iOS 27 immediately.
4. What If iOS 26.7.1 Still Doesn’t Appear?
If the update is missing, try these checks:
Check your installed version: Open Settings → General → About. You may already have iOS 26.7.1 installed.
Restart your iPhone: Then check Software Update again.
Check your internet connection: VPN or proxy connections can sometimes interfere with update checks.
Review beta settings: Open Software Update → Beta Updates and check your enrollment.
Check device management: Work or school-managed iPhones may have update restrictions.
Apple also recommends checking available storage and ensuring your iPhone has sufficient power before updating.
5. Can You Stay on iOS 26?
Yes. If Apple still offers iOS 26.7.1 for your device, you can install it without upgrading to iOS 27.
However, if you’ve already installed iOS 27, the normal Software Update screen cannot downgrade your iPhone to iOS 26.7.1.
Final Verdict
If your iPhone shows iOS 27.0.1 instead of iOS 26.7.1, the older update may not actually be missing.
Simply scroll to the Also Available section and select iOS 26.7.1 if it’s offered.
Apple is making iOS 27 more prominent, but eligible users can still choose the smaller security update and remain on iOS 26.
