Are Smart Glasses Recording You? Here’s How to Spot Them

Learn how to identify smart glasses nearby, spot recording indicators and use iPhone or Android apps to detect potentially camera-equipped eyewear.

Are Smart Glasses Recording You? Here's How to Spot Them
Smart glasses are becoming increasingly popular, especially models like Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. They look similar to ordinary sunglasses but can capture photos, record videos and interact with AI assistants.

While these features are convenient, they also raise privacy concerns. How can you tell whether someone nearby is wearing camera-equipped smart glasses—and whether they’re recording?

Here are some practical signs to look for.

1. Look for Tiny Cameras in the Frames

One of the easiest ways to recognize camera-equipped smart glasses is to examine the frame.

Many models have a small camera lens near an outer corner of the frame. Some also include a recording indicator on the opposite side.

However, not every pair of smart glasses includes a camera, and different brands use different designs.

2. Watch for a Recording Indicator Light

Some smart glasses, including Ray-Ban Meta models, feature an LED designed to signal when the camera is capturing photos or videos.

If you notice a small light on someone’s glasses, they may be recording.

Important: The absence of a visible light doesn’t guarantee that recording isn’t happening. Indicators vary by device and may be difficult to see in bright surroundings.

3. Use Nearby Glasses to Detect Smart Glasses

One useful option is Nearby Glasses, a free app available for both iPhone and Android.

The app scans Bluetooth signals from nearby devices and compares their identifiers with known smart-glasses models. You can adjust its detection sensitivity, although background alerts are currently supported only on Android.

4. Try ZuckOff for Bluetooth Detection

Another option is ZuckOff, which also scans nearby Bluetooth devices to identify possible smart glasses.

Basic scanning is free, while premium features include background detection and scanning history. The app offers a proximity estimate, but it cannot identify the exact person wearing the glasses.

5. Understand What Detection Apps Cannot Do

Bluetooth detection isn’t foolproof. Smart glasses may go undetected if Bluetooth is disabled, their identifiers aren’t recognized, or they’re outside the scanning range.

Likewise, detecting a pair of smart glasses doesn’t prove someone is recording you. These apps are useful warning tools, not definitive surveillance detectors.

What Should You Do If You’re Concerned?

If you suspect someone is recording you without permission, calmly ask whether their glasses have a camera and request that they stop recording. In private venues, you can also contact staff or management.

Avoid confronting or accusing someone solely because they are wearing unusual glasses.

Final Takeaway

Smart glasses are becoming harder to distinguish from ordinary eyewear, but camera lenses, recording indicators and Bluetooth detection apps can provide useful clues.

For iPhone and Android users, Nearby Glasses and ZuckOff offer additional awareness of potentially camera-equipped wearables nearby. Neither can guarantee detection or confirm that recording is underway.
