Your iPhone may be updated, but is it fully protected? Check these 7 important iOS security settings, including background updates and theft protection.

Your iPhone Is Up to Date, But These 7 Security Settings Still Matter
Your iPhone may say it’s running the latest version of iOS, but that doesn’t necessarily mean every security feature is enabled.

Apple provides additional security protections, privacy controls and background updates that are easy to overlook. Whether you’re using iOS 27 or an earlier supported version, these settings are worth checking.

1. Enable Background Security Improvements

One of the most important iPhone security settings is Background Security Improvements, which allows Apple to deliver certain security fixes between major iOS updates.

Go to: Settings → Privacy & Security → Background Security Improvements

Turn on Automatically Install if the option is available on your iPhone.

2. Turn On Automatic iOS Updates

Even if your iPhone is updated today, you should ensure future updates install automatically.

Open Settings → General → Software Update → Automatic Updates and enable the available automatic download and installation options.

This helps your iPhone receive important security patches without requiring constant manual checks.

3. Update Your iPhone Apps

Updating iOS doesn’t automatically guarantee that every installed app is current.

Open the App Store, tap your profile picture and check for pending updates.

Pay particular attention to banking, messaging, email and other apps that handle sensitive information.

4. Review App Privacy Permissions

Some apps may have permission to access your location, microphone, camera or photos unnecessarily.

Go to Settings → Privacy & Security and review the permission categories.

For location access, consider selecting While Using the App rather than Always when continuous access isn’t necessary.

5. Enable Stolen Device Protection

Apple’s Stolen Device Protection adds extra security when someone steals your iPhone and knows your passcode.

Go to: Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Stolen Device Protection

Enable the feature if your iPhone supports it. You can also choose to require a security delay more broadly rather than only away from familiar locations.

6. Check Find My iPhone

Find My helps you locate a lost iPhone and provides options to protect your information.

Open Settings → [Your Name] → Find My → Find My iPhone.

Enable Find My iPhone, Find My network and Send Last Location, where available.

7. Review Safety Check

Apple’s Safety Check helps you review who can access your information and which apps have permission to use sensitive data.

Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Safety Check.

Select Manage Sharing & Access to review your existing settings without automatically resetting everything.

Final Verdict

Seeing “iOS is up to date” is reassuring, but it’s only one part of keeping your iPhone secure.

Start by checking Background Security Improvements, Automatic Updates, Stolen Device Protection and Find My iPhone. These settings can provide valuable additional protection against security threats, theft and unauthorized access.

A few minutes spent reviewing your iPhone settings today could help prevent bigger problems later.
