How to Change Apple Maps’ Navigation Voice on iPhone and iPad

If you use Apple Maps for driving directions, you don’t have to stick with the default navigation voice. Apple lets you change the voice, accent and language used for spoken directions.

The interesting part is that Apple Maps doesn’t have a separate list of navigation voices. Instead, Maps uses the voice selected for Siri. So, changing Siri’s voice also changes the voice you hear while using Apple Maps.

How to Change the Apple Maps Voice

Follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Open Settings

Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

Step 2: Go to Siri

Scroll down and tap Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri, depending on your device and iOS version.

Step 3: Choose Voice

Tap Voice. You’ll see different voice varieties and voice options available for your selected language. Tap each option to hear a preview and choose the one you prefer.

Step 4: Change the Language

Want Maps to speak in another language?

Go back to the Siri settings and tap Language.

Choose your preferred language. After changing it, return to Voice and select the available voice for that language. Apple notes that available voices vary by language and region.

How to Change Maps Voice Volume

You can also control how loud Apple Maps speaks.

Go to: Settings → Apps → Maps → Spoken Directions

From there, you can adjust the default voice volume.

When you’re already navigating, you can also tap the audio control on the Maps screen and choose louder, normal or softer directions.

Useful Apple Maps Voice Settings

Apple gives you a few additional options under:

Settings → Apps → Maps → Spoken Directions

You can choose whether navigation:

  • Pauses spoken audio such as podcasts and audiobooks

  • Wakes the iPhone screen when giving directions

  • Plays directions through the radio in supported vehicles

These settings can be particularly useful if you frequently use Apple Maps while driving.

What About iOS 27?

With iOS 27, Apple is also introducing more expressive Siri voice options on supported hardware. Because Apple Maps uses the Siri voice system, changes to Siri’s available voices can also affect the navigation experience. However, these newer options aren’t available on every iPhone or in every region.

Final Thoughts

Changing the Apple Maps voice is surprisingly simple once you know where to look.

You don’t need to search through the Maps app for a hidden voice menu. Just remember:

Settings → Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri → Voice

Choose your preferred voice, and Apple Maps will use it for turn-by-turn directions.

So, if you’re tired of hearing the same navigation voice every time you drive, try changing your Siri voice—you may get a completely different Maps experience in just a few taps.
