iPhone Battery Longevity: 13 Practical Tricks to Extend Your Charge

Your iPhone battery is probably one of the most important components you rarely think about—until you suddenly see 10% remaining.

While no trick can make a lithium-ion battery last forever, a few simple changes can help you get more hours from a charge and, more importantly, slow the long-term aging of the battery. Apple itself notes that battery lifespan is affected by factors including temperature, charging patterns and charge cycles. 

Here are 13 practical ways to get more from your iPhone battery.

1. Turn On Optimized Battery Charging

Go to: Settings → Battery → Charging

On iPhone 15 and later, Optimized Battery Charging works when the charge limit is set to 100%. It learns your charging routine and can pause charging around 80% before finishing closer to when you normally unplug your iPhone. 

This reduces the amount of time your battery spends sitting at 100%.

2. Consider an 80% Charge Limit

If you don’t need maximum battery capacity every day, iPhone 15 and newer models let you set a charge limit between 80% and 100% in 5% increments.

Go to: Settings → Battery → Charging → Charge Limit

Apple says a lower limit can help reduce battery wear, particularly for people who frequently charge their phones or leave them connected to power for long periods. 

For heavy users, 90% or 95% can be a practical compromise between battery longevity and daily battery life.

3. Keep Your iPhone Cool

Heat is one of the biggest enemies of battery longevity.

Apple recommends avoiding charging or using an iPhone in temperatures above 35°C (95°F) because prolonged exposure to high temperatures can permanently reduce battery lifespan. 

Avoid leaving your iPhone:

  • In direct sunlight

  • Inside a hot car

  • Under a pillow while charging

  • In extremely hot environments

If your phone becomes noticeably hot during charging, move it somewhere cooler.

4. Don’t Wait for 0%

You don’t need to completely drain your iPhone before charging it.

Modern lithium-ion batteries don’t require the old-fashioned “full discharge and recharge” routine. Apple explicitly says you can charge your iPhone even when the battery isn’t fully depleted. 

Short top-ups throughout the day are perfectly fine.

5. Use Low Power Mode

When you’re running low, Low Power Mode can extend the remaining battery life by reducing or disabling certain background activities.

You don’t necessarily need to disable it everywhere. Instead, turn it off for apps that don’t need to constantly refresh their content.

This can reduce unnecessary background activity without affecting the applications you actually depend on.

Review which apps have access.

If your iPhone supports it, this can be an easy “set it and forget it” option.

The Biggest Battery Rule: Avoid Heat

Don’t let your iPhone get excessively hot.

Apple specifically warns that temperatures above 35°C can permanently reduce battery lifespan. 

Charging, gaming, recording 4K video or using navigation in a hot environment can make the phone warmer. Give it some ventilation whenever possible.

Battery Life vs. Battery Lifespan

There’s an important difference:

Battery life = how long your iPhone operates before you need to recharge it.

Battery lifespan = how long the battery remains useful before it needs replacement.

Apple’s batteries naturally lose capacity as they chemically age. Under ideal conditions, batteries in iPhone 15 and later models are designed to retain 80% of their original capacity at 1,000 complete charge cycles, while iPhone 14 and earlier models are designed around 500 cycles. Actual results vary depending on how the phone is used and charged.
