iPhone 18 Pro Max Rumored Upgrades vs iPhone 17 Pro Max: Periscope Zoom, Larger Battery

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is already one of Apple’s most powerful iPhones, so the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max has a difficult job: convincing users that it’s worth upgrading.

Apple is expected to unveil the new flagship iPhone 18 line up at its September 9, 2026 “Surprise and Shine” event. While the company has not confirmed the specifications, current rumors point to improvements in the camera system, battery, processor, display design and cellular connectivity.

Here are the five upgrades that could matter most.

1. Variable-Aperture Camera

The biggest rumored camera upgrade is variable aperture. The iPhone 18 Pro Max could allow its main camera to control how much light enters the lens. This would give the camera more flexibility in different lighting conditions and could provide photographers with greater control over exposure and depth.

For everyday users, this could mean better-looking photos in challenging lighting. For photography enthusiasts, it could be a much more meaningful upgrade.

The rest of the camera system is expected to remain broadly similar, with 48MP sensors and a telephoto camera offering up to 5x or potentially 6x optical zoom.

2. A Bigger Battery

Battery life could be another major reason to consider the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Current reports suggest the new model could feature a battery between roughly 5,321mAh and 5,567mAh, compared with around 5,088mAh for the eSIM version of the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Combined with the efficiency improvements expected from the new A20 Pro chip and C2 modem, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could deliver noticeably longer real-world battery life.

For people who regularly use their iPhone for gaming, navigation, video recording or travel, this could be one of the most useful upgrades.

3. New A20 Pro Chip

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to introduce the A20 Pro, reportedly Apple’s first iPhone chip built using a 2nm manufacturing process.

A smaller manufacturing process can allow more transistors to fit into the chip while improving efficiency.

Some reports suggest the A20 Pro could offer around 18% better performance and 30% improved power efficiency compared with the A19 Pro, although these figures remain unconfirmed.

In everyday use, the difference may not be immediately obvious. However, demanding gaming, AI processing, video editing and other intensive workloads could benefit considerably.

4. Smaller Dynamic Island

Apple may also reduce the size of the Dynamic Island. Some Face ID components are rumored to move underneath the display, potentially allowing Apple to make the pill smaller while keeping the same essential functionality.

It isn’t the dramatic all-screen iPhone that some users have been waiting for, but even a smaller Dynamic Island could provide a cleaner-looking display.

5. Apple’s C2 Modem

The iPhone 18 Pro Max could also become the first flagship iPhone to use Apple’s C2 modem.

Apple has already begun developing its own cellular modem technology, and the C2 would represent another step toward reducing its reliance on third-party modem suppliers.

Beyond connectivity improvements, an Apple-designed modem could be better optimized with the iPhone’s processor and operating system, potentially improving efficiency and battery life.

Should You Upgrade?

If you already own an iPhone 17 Pro Max, the upgrade may not be essential for everyone.

The design is expected to remain relatively familiar, while the biggest improvements appear to be under the hood. However, better battery life and a variable-aperture camera could make the upgrade particularly attractive to heavy users and photography enthusiasts.

For iPhone 16 Pro Max or older users, the jump could be much more noticeable.

Apple is expected to reveal the final details on September 9.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max may not reinvent the iPhone—but if the larger battery, variable-aperture camera, A20 Pro chip and C2 modem all arrive as rumored, it could become a seriously refined flagship rather than just another yearly upgrade.
