Why New iOS Versions Can Slow iPhone Performance and How to Speed It Up

Ever installed a new iOS update and suddenly felt like your iPhone wasn’t as fast as it used to be?

1. Give Your iPhone a Few Days

This is the simplest—and most overlooked—solution.

Apple recommends waiting and checking battery behavior again if battery life drops immediately after an update because background update-related activity may still be running. 

If the phone remains noticeably slow after that period, then it’s time to investigate.

2. Check What’s Consuming Your Battery

The Battery section can show which apps and system activities are consuming the most power.

Look for unusually high Background Activity, excessive notifications or apps that are using significant resources even when you’re barely using them.

3. Check Your Battery Health

4. Don’t Ignore Low Storage

If your storage is nearly full, consider removing:

  • Unused apps

  • Large videos

  • Old downloads

  • Duplicate photos

  • Offline media

  • Large message attachments

You don’t need to obsess over keeping a specific amount free, but a nearly full iPhone is worth cleaning up.

5. Reduce Background Activity

If specific apps are constantly working in the background, review their permissions.

6. Use Low Power Mode When Necessary

Settings → Battery → Power Mode → Low Power Mode

Apple says Low Power Mode reduces or disables certain activities and features, including some background activity, Mail fetching and visual effects. 

It’s not necessarily something you need to leave enabled permanently, but it’s useful when battery life matters more than maximum performance.

7. Consider Adaptive Power

On supported iPhones running iOS 26 or later, Adaptive Power can automatically make performance adjustments when your device is using more power than usual.

Apple says it can even activate Low Power Mode automatically when the battery reaches 20 percent. Supported devices include iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 models and the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max. 

It’s a useful option if you want iOS to manage battery consumption for you.

Is Apple Actually Making Old iPhones Slower?

This is where the story gets more nuanced.

Apple does have a performance-management system designed to prevent unexpected shutdowns when batteries have aged. It can dynamically adjust certain CPU and GPU behavior depending on battery condition and power requirements. That doesn’t mean every iOS update deliberately slows every older iPhone.

There are several different factors at work:

New software → temporary background processing

Older battery → possible performance management

Demanding features → increased resource usage

Poorly optimized apps → background drain

Low storage → less room for normal operations

Understanding the difference can save you from replacing an otherwise perfectly usable iPhone.
