WhatsApp is more than just a messaging app. Beyond sending texts, photos and voice notes, it includes several useful features that can make everyday conversations faster, more private and better organized.

1. Edit Messages After Sending Them

Made a typo or sent the wrong information? WhatsApp lets you edit a message within 15 minutes of sending it.

Simply press and hold your message, choose Edit, make your changes and save.

The recipient will see an Edited label, but not the original version through the edit feature.

2. Send Photos in HD Quality

WhatsApp normally compresses images to make sharing faster. If you want to preserve more detail, you can send photos in HD.

Open a conversation, select a photo, tap the HD option and choose HD quality before sending.

For even better preservation of the original file, send the image as a document instead of a regular photo.

3. Lock Private Conversations

Want to keep sensitive conversations away from your main chat list?

WhatsApp’s Chat Lock feature moves selected conversations into a protected area that requires device authentication.

Open a conversation, tap the contact or group name, then look for Chat Lock.

You can also set up a secret code to hide the Locked Chats folder from your regular chat list.

4. Automatically Delete Old Messages

Want to keep conversations from piling up forever? Turn on Disappearing Messages.

Open a chat, tap the contact or group name, choose Disappearing Messages, and select 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days.

New messages will disappear after the selected period, though recipients can still save or capture their contents. Existing chat history isn’t automatically erased.

5. Hide Your Last Seen and Online Status

WhatsApp lets you control who can see when you were last active.

Go to WhatsApp → Settings (or You) → Privacy → Last Seen & Online.

Choose My Contacts Except… to hide your activity from specific people, or select Nobody for greater privacy.

You can also control who sees when you’re currently online.

6. Pin Important Messages

Important addresses, meeting times and other details can quickly disappear in busy conversations.

To keep a message easy to find, press and hold it and select Pin (on iPhone, you may need to tap More first).

WhatsApp lets you pin up to three messages per conversation for 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days.

7. Send Messages to Yourself

Here’s a surprisingly useful trick: WhatsApp can act as a personal notebook.

Tap New Chat, search for your own name or number, and open the conversation labeled as yourself.

You can save links, shopping lists, photos, quick reminders and voice notes. These messages can also be accessed through your linked WhatsApp devices.

Bonus: Give Important Contacts Custom Notification Sounds

Want to know who’s messaging without looking at your screen?

Open a chat, tap the contact’s name and look for Notifications or Custom Notifications. Choose a different alert tone where supported.

It’s a convenient way to distinguish family messages from less urgent group chats.
