8 Hidden iPhone Keyboard Tricks You’ll Wish You Knew Sooner

Discover 8 useful iPhone keyboard tips, including the hidden trackpad, swipe typing, text shortcuts, one-handed mode, Dictation and editing gestures.

8 Hidden iPhone Keyboard Tricks You’ll Wish You Knew Sooner

Your iPhone keyboard has several useful tricks that can make everyday typing faster and less frustrating. Some are easy to miss, even if you’ve owned an iPhone for years.

Here are eight iPhone keyboard tips worth learning.

1. Turn the Space Bar Into a Trackpad

Trying to position the cursor between two letters can be annoying. Instead, touch and hold the Space bar until the keyboard turns into a trackpad.

Slide your finger around to precisely position the cursor. You can also use a second finger to start selecting text.

2. Swipe Instead of Typing

With QuickPath, you can type without lifting your finger.

Simply slide from letter to letter and lift your finger when the word is complete. You can freely switch between swiping and normal tapping while writing.

3. Create Shortcuts for Things You Type Often

If you repeatedly type your email, address, phone number or common phrases, use Text Replacement.

Go to: Settings → General → Keyboard → Text Replacement → +

For example, you could set @@ to automatically expand into your email address. Apple also includes “omw” → “On my way!” as a built-in example.

4. Use the One-Handed Keyboard

Large iPhones can be difficult to type on with one hand.

Touch and hold the Emoji or Globe button, then choose the left- or right-handed keyboard layout. The keyboard moves closer to your thumb.

5. Quickly Type Numbers and Symbols

Instead of tapping 123, entering a number and manually switching back, touch and hold the 123 key, slide to the number or symbol you need, and release.

The keyboard returns to letters, making it much quicker when adding occasional numbers or punctuation.

6. Use Three-Finger Gestures for Editing

iPhone has several handy gestures for editing text.

Swipe left with three fingers to undo your last edit, or swipe right with three fingers to redo it. You can also pinch inward with three fingers to copy and pinch outward to paste.

7. Dictate Instead of Typing

For longer messages, tapping the microphone button can be much faster than typing.

iPhone Dictation supports punctuation, emoji and editing commands. For example, you can say “heart emoji,” “new paragraph,” “delete [phrase],” or “undo.”

In iOS 27, Apple Intelligence also improves spelling, punctuation and capitalization for Dictation on supported newer iPhones.

8. Find Hidden Characters by Holding a Key

Need an accented character such as é, ñ or ü?

Touch and hold the related letter and additional characters will appear. Slide your finger to the one you want and release. This also works with certain numbers and symbols.

Bonus: Double-Tap Space for a Period

There’s another tiny shortcut worth remembering: at the end of a sentence, double-tap the Space bar.

Your iPhone automatically inserts a period followed by a space, so you can immediately start the next sentence.

Verdict

You don’t need a third-party keyboard to type faster on your iPhone. Features such as the Space bar trackpad, QuickPath, Text Replacement, one-handed mode and Dictation can make a noticeable difference once they become part of your daily routine.

If you learn only one trick, start with the Space bar trackpad. It’s one of the easiest ways to fix typos and precisely move the cursor.
