How to Create Your Own AI Wallpapers in iOS 27

Apple has made iPhone wallpaper customization much more creative in iOS 27. With Image Playground integrated into the wallpaper experience, compatible iPhones can use Apple Intelligence to generate an original wallpaper from a simple description.

1. Open the Wallpaper Gallery

There are two easy ways to get started.

Go to: Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper

Or touch and hold your Lock Screen, then tap the + button to create a new wallpaper.

2. Choose Image Playground

From the wallpaper gallery, select Image Playground.

This is where Apple Intelligence comes in. You can generate an entirely new image rather than selecting an existing photograph.

Image Playground supports text descriptions as well as images and people from your Photos library. 

3. Describe the Wallpaper You Want

Enter a description of your ideal wallpaper.

For example: A futuristic glass city at night with blue lights and mountains in the distance

Or something simpler: Minimal sunset over calm mountains

You can experiment with different descriptions until you get the look you want.

Image Playground also offers different visual styles. Apple’s current version even allows you to select ChatGPT when you want to describe a particular image style. 

4. Refine Your AI Wallpaper

Don’t like the first result? You don’t have to start over.

Change your description or add additional instructions about the style, lighting, colors, subject, or overall appearance, then generate another version. 

You can keep experimenting until you find something that works well behind your Lock Screen clock and widgets.

5. Set It as Your Wallpaper

Once you’re happy with the result, tap Add.

You can then choose:

Set as Wallpaper Pair — uses it for both your Lock Screen and Home Screen.

Customize Home Screen — lets you create a different appearance for the Home Screen.

You can also customize the clock, widgets, controls and other Lock Screen elements. 

You Can Create Wallpapers From Your Photos Too

AI generation isn’t your only option.

iOS 27 can suggest wallpapers using photos of your favorite people and pets, automatically combining images with different effects and clock styles. Look under Photos → Collections → Wallpaper Suggestions. 

Compatible photos can also use Apple’s Spatial Scene effect to create a more three-dimensional Lock Screen appearance.

Which iPhones Support AI Wallpaper Creation?

Because Image Playground uses Apple Intelligence, you’ll need a compatible iPhone.

Apple currently lists iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 models and later compatible iPhones for Apple Intelligence in iOS 27. Availability can also vary by language and region. 

Older iPhones running iOS 27 can still use traditional wallpaper customization options, but they won’t necessarily have the AI-generation features.
