How to Recover and Restore an Apple Watch Using an iPhone or iPad

Learn how to recover and restore an Apple Watch showing a red exclamation point or recovery screen using a nearby iPhone or iPad.

How to Recover and Restore an Apple Watch Using an iPhone or iPad

If your Apple Watch suddenly shows a red exclamation point or an animation asking you to bring an iPhone close, it doesn’t necessarily mean the watch needs to be sent to Apple for repair.

Apple provides a built-in Apple Watch recovery process that can reinstall watchOS using a nearby iPhone or iPad. The process is relatively straightforward, but there are a few requirements you need to follow carefully.

Here’s how to recover an Apple Watch and what to try if the recovery process doesn’t work.

When Does an Apple Watch Need Recovery?

Your Apple Watch may enter recovery mode when it encounters a serious software problem or when an update or restore cannot complete normally.

You’ll typically see one of two screens:

  • An animation showing an Apple Watch and iPhone being brought together
  • A red exclamation point (!)

These screens indicate that watchOS may need to be updated or restored.

What You Need Before Starting

Before attempting recovery, make sure your Apple Watch has at least 50% battery and leave it connected to its charger throughout the entire process.

You’ll also need an iPhone or iPad running the latest available version of iOS or iPadOS. The device should be unlocked, connected to Wi-Fi, and have Bluetooth enabled.

Interestingly, you don’t have to use the iPhone normally paired with your Apple Watch. Apple says you can use another compatible iPhone or iPad, including one belonging to a friend. Your personal Apple Watch information isn’t shared with that device during recovery.

How to Recover Your Apple Watch

First, keep the Apple Watch connected to its charger.

Bring the unlocked iPhone or iPad close to the Apple Watch.

If your Watch already displays the iPhone-and-Watch recovery animation, double-click the side button below the Digital Crown.

Your nearby iPhone or iPad should recognize the Apple Watch and display recovery instructions.

Follow the prompts shown on the screen.

According to the current recovery process described by iPhone in Canada, you may be given options including Exit Recovery Mode and System Recovery. Choosing System Recovery reinstalls the latest supported version of watchOS.

Keep both devices close together and leave the Apple Watch on its charger while recovery completes.

The process can take some time, so don’t disconnect the charger or move the devices apart prematurely.

What If Your Apple Watch Shows a Red “!”?

The procedure is slightly different when you’re looking at the red exclamation mark.

First, double-click the Apple Watch side button.

Make sure the Watch has at least 50% battery and place it on its charger.

Bring your unlocked iPhone or iPad close to the Watch, then double-click the side button again.

Follow the recovery instructions that appear on the nearby device.

If recovery completes successfully, your Apple Watch should restart normally.

Recovery Isn’t the Same as Restoring From a Backup

There are two related processes that are easy to confuse. System Recovery repairs or reinstalls watchOS when the Watch cannot start normally.

Restore from Backup brings your apps, settings and other supported information back after the Watch has been erased or you’re setting up another Apple Watch.

Apple Watch automatically backs up information to its paired iPhone. When you unpair the Watch normally, the iPhone also creates a backup before erasing it.

When pairing again, choose: Restore from Backup

and select the appropriate backup.

Forgot Your Apple Watch Passcode?

If the problem is simply a forgotten passcode, you don’t need the recovery procedure above.

Put your Watch on its charger, press and hold the side button until the power controls appear, then press and hold the Digital Crown until you see the option to erase the device.

Choose: Reset → Reset

After the Apple Watch finishes erasing, pair it with your iPhone again and choose Restore from Backup when prompted.

Remember that resetting the Watch this way doesn’t remove Activation Lock. You’ll still need the Apple Account credentials associated with the device.

What If Apple Watch Recovery Doesn’t Work?

Apple recommends checking your Wi-Fi connection first.

If recovery fails, try a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network instead of 5GHz and avoid captive networks—such as Wi-Fi requiring a browser login—as well as 802.1X networks.

If the Apple Watch continues displaying a red exclamation point after repeated recovery attempts, Apple says the device may require service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I restore an Apple Watch without its paired iPhone?

Yes. For the system-recovery procedure, Apple says you can use another compatible iPhone or iPad. It doesn’t have to be the device normally paired with your Apple Watch.

Does Apple Watch need to be charged before recovery?

Yes. Apple requires at least 50% charge, and the Watch should remain connected to its charger throughout recovery.

What does the red exclamation mark on Apple Watch mean?

A red “!” can indicate that the Apple Watch needs to be recovered or restored. Double-clicking the side button can initiate the recovery process with a nearby iPhone or iPad.

Can I restore my Apple Watch data afterward?

Yes, if a backup is available. During setup, pair the Apple Watch with your iPhone and choose Restore from Backup. Apple Watch data is normally backed up automatically to its paired iPhone.

Will recovering Apple Watch remove Activation Lock?

No. Activation Lock remains an important security measure. If the Watch is linked to an Apple Account, the associated credentials may be required during setup.

VERDICT

Apple’s recovery system means that an Apple Watch stuck on a red exclamation point or recovery screen doesn’t automatically require a trip to an Apple Store.

Keep the Watch charged above 50%, place it on its charger, bring an updated iPhone or iPad nearby, and use the Watch’s side button to start recovery.

And because Apple now allows a compatible iPhone or iPad that isn’t normally paired with the Watch to assist with recovery, fixing a software-bricked Apple Watch is considerably more convenient than it once was.
