Apple Shares New Guide for Using iOS 27 Parental Controls

Apple’s new iOS 27 parental controls guide explains Screen Time Schedules, Time Allowances, Ask to Browse, Communication Safety and more for families.

Apple Shares New Guide for Using iOS 27 Parental Controls

Apple has released a new guide to help parents get more from the redesigned parental controls in iOS 27.

Called “Building Healthy Digital Habits: A Guide for Families,” the resource was developed with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and focuses on creating healthier technology habits rather than simply restricting children’s iPhone use.

The timing is useful because iOS 27 significantly changes Screen Time. Parents can now create different schedules throughout the day, set category-based time allowances, approve new websites, manage communication, and start younger users with only selected apps.

Here are the six areas Apple recommends families focus on.

1. Talk About Screen Time Before Setting Limits

Apple’s first recommendation isn’t a setting at all.

Parents are encouraged to talk with their children about why screen-time boundaries exist and involve them in establishing expectations.

Instead of simply saying “two hours per day,” families might discuss how device use should fit alongside:

  • Sleep
  • School and homework
  • Physical activity
  • Family time
  • Friends and social activities

The goal is to create rules children understand rather than restrictions that appear arbitrary.

2. Create a Child Account

Apple recommends giving children their own Child Account instead of sharing a parent’s Apple Account.

A Child Account unlocks age-appropriate protections and lets parents manage the child’s experience through Family Sharing.

After creating the account on an iPhone or iPad, iOS 27 can also start the child with a limited selection of apps. Parents can choose essential apps, use a curated selection, or manually decide which apps are available.

More apps can then be approved over time.

3. Control Apps and Websites

Two particularly useful tools are Ask to Buy and the new Ask to Browse.

Ask to Buy lets parents review app downloads and purchases.

Ask to Browse does something similar for the web. When enabled, children must request permission before accessing a new website in Safari or another supported browser.

Parents can approve useful websites in advance—for example, a school’s website.

Apple says Ask to Browse is enabled by default for Child Accounts under 13, although the applicable age can vary by country or region.

4. Set Screen Time Schedules

One of iOS 27’s biggest improvements is Screen Time Schedules.

Instead of applying one rule for an entire day, parents can decide which apps are available at different times.

A schedule might look like:

Before School → School → After School → Evening

Parents can also create different schedules for weekdays and weekends.

This makes Screen Time much more flexible. Games could be unavailable during school hours, for example, while educational and communication apps remain accessible.

Parents also get quick controls to temporarily pause device time, allow unlimited time, or modify the day’s schedule.

5. Use Time Allowances Instead of Blocking Everything

iOS 27 introduces Time Allowances for categories including:

Games • Social Media • Entertainment

Parents decide how much time children can spend within those categories.

Apple provides age-tailored starting guidance informed by expert research, but families can adjust those limits according to their own needs.

This provides a middle ground between unlimited access and completely blocking an app.

6. Manage Communication and Sensitive Content

iOS 27 also strengthens children’s communication protections.

Parents can control who a child communicates with, while Communication Safety can detect sensitive content in supported photos and videos.

Apple expanded the system in iOS 27 beyond nudity to include detected gore and violent content.

Communication Safety is enabled by default for children under 18. Apple says processing happens on-device, so it doesn’t gain access to the photos or videos being analyzed.

The protection can also apply to supported live FaceTime interactions.

How to Access iOS 27 Parental Controls

On a parent’s iPhone, start with:

Settings → Family → [Child’s Name]

From there, iOS 27 separates major controls into areas such as Screen Time, Apps & Websites, communication, and other restrictions.

For Ask to Browse specifically, Apple provides:

Settings → Family → [Child] → Apps & Websites → Restrictions → Websites → Filtering

You can then choose the appropriate website-access level.

Important: Update All Family Devices

There’s one requirement parents shouldn’t overlook.

To use the redesigned Screen Time experience, Apple says devices in the Family Sharing group need to be updated to the current generation of Apple’s operating systems, including iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27, as applicable.

If one of your family’s devices is still running older software, check compatibility and update availability before attempting to configure all of the new controls.

Frequently Asked Questions

The major additions include Screen Time Schedules, Time Allowances, Ask to Browse, redesigned Screen Time controls, stronger Communication Safety, and improved app-access management.

Can parents approve websites before children visit them?

Yes. Ask to Browse lets parents approve websites in advance or approve/decline requests when a child tries to visit a new site.

Can I set different iPhone limits for school and weekends?

Yes. Screen Time Schedules can provide different app availability at different times of day, and parents can create separate weekday and weekend routines.

Can I limit social media without blocking it completely?

Yes. Time Allowances can limit the amount of time children spend in categories such as Social Media, Games, and Entertainment.

Does iOS 27 automatically block adult websites?

Apple says Limit Adult Websites is enabled by default for Child Accounts under 18, with applicable ages varying by country or region.

Does Communication Safety send children’s photos to Apple?

Verdict

Apple’s new iOS 27 parental-control guide makes an important point: good digital habits aren’t created by simply blocking everything.

The redesigned Screen Time gives parents more precise tools to decide when children can use apps, how long they can use certain categories, which websites they can visit, which apps they can access, and who they can communicate with.

For parents setting up iOS 27, a practical starting point is to create a proper Child Account, configure Ask to Browse, establish a Screen Time Schedule, and then use Time Allowances for entertainment, games, and social media.

As children grow, those settings can be adjusted rather than relying on one set of restrictions indefinitely.
